Mandela Scholarship Fund for South African Students in Netherlands



Leiden University is offering Mandela Scholarship Fund for South African Students in Netherlands. The scholarship is available for exchange and study abroad students to pursue their studies for 1 semester.
The central purpose of The Mandela Rhodes Foundation is to build exceptional leadership capacity in Africa (whilst also seeking to foster better reconciliation and entrepreneurship) through its various programmes and, to this end, aims to be the leading protagonist in Africa for such endeavours.
Leiden University is one of Europe’s leading intern
ational research universities. It has seven faculties in the arts, sciences and social sciences, spread over locations in Leiden and The Hague. The University has over 5,500 staff members and 25,800 students. The motto of the University is ‘Praesidium Libertatis’ – Bastion of Freedom.
Applicants will need to demonstrate your proficiency in English, preferably by means of an IELTS test though we also accept TOEFL, the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) and the Certificate of Advanced English (CAE).
Course Level: Scholarship is available for exchange or study abroad program at Leiden University.
Study Subject(s): Scholarship is awarded in all subjects offered by the Leiden University.
Scholarship Award: Scholarship Amount is as follows:
(a) For Exchange students:
  • International travel costs: €1000
  • Living allowance: €800 per month (max. 5 months)
  • Insurance: will be sponsored by AON Student Insurance and arranged by the Scholarships Department of Leiden University.
    (b) For Study Abroad Students:
  • Tuition fee: actual fee
  • International travel costs: €1000
  • Living allowance: €800 per month (max. 5 months)
  • Insurance: Will be sponsored by AON Student Insurance and arranged by the Scholarships Department of Leide
Scholarship can be taken in Netherlands
Eligibility: Applicants must be
  • Permanent residents of South Africa
  • Enrolled at a South African University
  • Accepted for a semester program at Leiden University as an exchange or Study Abroad student
  • Willing to upgrade or extend their knowledge in order to make a contribution towards the development of South Africa
  • Committed to returning to their country after their study period at Leiden University
Nationality: Mandela Scholarship Fund is open for the South African students.
College Admission Requirement
Entrance Requirement:-Applicant should have completed at least two years of university education
– Applicant must have a GPA of at least 3.2 out of 4.0 (or equivalent)
– Applicant’s academic background must be relevant to the courses they are applying for
Test Requirement: No
English Language Requirement: Applicant will need to demonstrate your proficiency in English, preferably by means of an IELTS test though we also accept TOEFL, the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) and the Certificate of Advanced English (CAE). University need to receive an original report with test results that are no more than two years old.

How to Apply: Applications can be submitted by post or via email. The required application documents are:
  • Application form (in Word-Format) (including a letter of motivation);
  • Admission letter for a Study Abroad or Exchange programme at Leiden University;
  • Two original letters of recommendation (one of which should be from an academic staff member);
  • A transcript of academic records;
  • An up-to-date Curriculum vitae;
  • Photocopy of a valid passport and any other passports, if applicant have dual nationality;
  • Copy of the outcome of other scholarship/grant applications;
  • Proof that applicant can support themselves financially, since the Mandela Scholarship Fund is not sufficient to cover all expenses. Proof can be: 1) a letter that states that they receive a student grant and the exact amount and duration of this grant 2) a recent bank statement in their own name that shows that they have sufficient financial means to cover their expenses in The Netherlands 3) a notary statement declaring that their parents have sufficient financial means to support their study in The Netherlands.
Application Deadline: The application deadline is April 1, 2017 for programs starting in September 2017.
