Job description

APOPO is a Belgian NGO with a mission to develop detection rats technology to provide solutions for global problems and inspire positive social change. APOPO uses African giant pouched rats, nicknamed
"HeroRATs", to detect landmines and tuberculosis using their extraordinary sense of smell. APOPO's, headquarters are in Tanzania and its operations are located in Mozambique, Angola and Cambodia.

For our head office in Morogoro, Tanzania, we are currently looking for an experienced CFO who will be directly responsible for managing all finance and accounting activities of APOPO. The CFO will play a broad leadership role in APOPO's growth and development. S/he will serve as a financial advisor to the CEO and the management team on matters relating to financial status, risk management and long-term planning. In addition, the CFO will ensure the quality and continual improvement of APOPO's financial operations and systems, including budgeting, accounting, cash management, auditing, donor reporting, and contracts and grant management.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Manage all financial operations of the organization including tax, accounting, bank relationships, treasury, cash management, payroll, forecasting, and risk management activities to ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements.
  • Foster a collaborative working relationship across the organization to ensure effective budget preparation, monitoring of budget variances and linking actual results back to strategic priorities established by the Governing Board and the management team.
  • Advise CEO and management team on financial and organizational effectiveness matters, risk management and the implications of decisions.
  • Provide strategic guidance to establish the policies, processes and systems necessary to manage the organization's fiscal and administrative operations in an effective and efficient manner.
  • Oversee compliance with policies and procedures to ensure best practices.
  • Work in partnership with fundraising and development staff to ensure responsible tracking of funds raised and spent.
  • Prepare timely and accurate financial reports for the management team and the Governing Board.
  • Lead audit preparations and manage the ongoing relationship with the external auditors to ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements.
  • Assist in the financial management of APOPO's other related legal entities
Education/Experience:
  • An MBA or equivalent advanced professional degree is strongly preferred.
  • A minimum of 5 years of hands on experience in finance or accounting management, including in-depth financial management experience working with or for the international non-profit sector.
  • Additional experience working across operational functions – human resources, grants management, fundraising and administration preferred.
  • Demonstrated in depth knowledge of accounting rules including those specifically focused on non-profit organizations; knowledge of Belgian accounting standards is a plus.
  • Experience managing government funds preferred.

  • Strong and proven organizational skills; comfortable with a high level of visibility, responsibility and accountability.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communications skills and the ability to develop positive and productive relationships and decisively build buy-in across the organization.
  • Ability to generate ideas, initiate actions and follow them through.
  • Ability to work independently on multiple tasks and projects, and prioritize workflow to meet critical deadlines whilst paying attention to important detail.
  • Ability to analyze financial data in a global office environment.
