Chemonics seeks a chief of party for the a
nticipated USAID-funded Tanzania Tusome Pamoja ("Let's Read Together" in Kiswahili) Program to improve lifelong learning skills, defined as mastery of early grade reading, writing, and arithmetic. The five-year, $70-million program is expected to support four regions of Tanzania in improving quality of basic skills instruction at the early primary level, strengthening Ministry of Education and Vocational Training skills delivery systems, and increasing community and parental engagement in early primary education. We are looking for individuals who have a passion for making a difference in the lives of people around the world.
Responsibilities include:
  • Provide vision and technical leadership and oversee management and administration of the program
  • Coordinate and take ultimate responsibility for all contract management and implementation tasks
  • Serve as the program's primary liaison with USAID/Tanzania on technical matters; adjust programs and operations in response to USAID/Tanzania technical direction
  • Ensure effective and efficient performance for all aspects of the contract, overseeing quality control, reporting, and responsiveness of technical assistance provided under the contract
  • Ensure Tusome Pamoja deploys specific interventions that promote gender equity into all relevant aspects of the contract
  • Supervise the performance of all long- and short-term advisors, consultants, and staff; delegate responsibilities as necessary
  • Master's or Ph.D.-level degree in education, social sciences, or other relevant field from an accredited university
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in managing and implementing education or youth programs in developing countries
  • Demonstrated exemplary management, communication, supervisory, and interpersonal skills to ensure internal coherence among diverse team members and productive relations with the government of Tanzania, donors, and the international community
  • Minimum five years of experience in a senior management position demonstrating the ability to create and maintain effective working relationships with senior U.S. and foreign government officials, particularly in Tanzania; other development projects; host governments; and international agencies
  • Expertise in effective system strengthening, early grade reading, public participation, and partnership building with government, at local and national levels preferred
  • Experience implementing interventions that promote gender equity preferred
  • Africa experience required; Tanzania experience preferred
  • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated leadership, versatility, and integrity
  • Strong English writing and speaking skills
