Volunteer Opportunity description

Position: Media Relations Officer

Duty Station: Arusha
The School of St Jude is a charity funded school that provides a FREE, high-quality education to over 1,850 primary and secondary children from the poorest communities in Arusha.
We are seeking a creative energetic individual to fill the position above based in Arusha, Tanzania at the School of St Jude.
Job Purpose:
  • To establish relationships with journalists and media outlets and obtain media exposure in Australia and across the globe.
  • To prepare, edit and analyze pertinent information about the school and share it with all current and potential supporters.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Prepare a wide variety of communications for print, TV, radio, and the Internet
  • Write media releases and pitch stories to relevant media outlets to increase the public's awareness of St Jude's and raise funds
  • Review , proof read, and share relevant information
  • Update all communications with newsworthy stories about St Jude's on a range of mediums including the St Jude's website
  • Assist with sourcing stories for the schools monthly newsletter
  • Work alongside the Australian Coordinator and the US Coordinator to obtain media coverage and promotion of promotional speaking tours.
  • Write blog posts for the St Jude's blog and other relevant blogs
Qualifications, Skills & Attributes:
  • Degree in Journalism, Mass/media Communication, or its relevant
  • 2 Years working experience
  • Experience in using media relations, web /mobile /social media, print and events
  • Previous experience working in a non-profit organisation desirable
Skills and Competence:
  • Superior creative writing skills
  • Extraordinary communication and networking skills
  • Excellent Microsoft Suite skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Be flexible, open-minded, tolerant and appreciate the complexities of working in a rapidly growing charity in a developing country
  • Have a passion for our mission and a strong desire to make a positive difference performing a variety of tasks; from the mundane to the fun and interesting!
  • Work well independently and as part of a team of Tanzanian staff and international volunteers
  • Have good emotional and physical health and the energy and drive to take on new challenges
A minimum commitment of 12 months is expected.
