The incumbent shall act under the overall supervision of the President of the ICTR and the Chief, Chambers Support Section.

Responsibilities
The incumbent shall be responsible for the following duties:
• Assist the President in his judicial and administrative duties including management of scheduling of cases before the Tribunal, co-ordination the work of all of the organs of the Tribunal, and discharging his duties with the internal organs of the Tribunal;
• Assist the President to discharge his duties as Head of the Tribunal before various international fora including United Nations organs, such as the Security Council and General Assembly by: conducting relevant background legal research; drafting correspondence, briefing notes, reports, and speeches; co-ordinating with relevant officials and stakeholders;
• Assist the President in drafting decisions and orders in matters which fall directly under his purview, including early release applications, enforcement of sentence, and assignment of Chambers.
• Perform legal research and analysis, prepare legal opinions and studies on various legal issues including international criminal law, international humanitarian law, human rights law, public international law, and comparative law;
• Contribute to preparation, in coordination with the Judges and the President, as required, of comments and proposals for submission to Plenary Sessions;
• Assist and contribute to the development and implementation of continuing legal education programmes for the officers in the Chambers Support Section, including enabling exchange of experience among the legal staff in the Tribunals (in-house seminars, workshops, etc.);
• Serve on various standing boards, committees, ad hoc working groups and task forces, as required;
• Perform other duties as may be assigned.

Education
Advanced University degree in law, with an emphasis on criminal law, international humanitarian law, or human rights law.

Work Experience
Two years progressively responsible experience in legal analysis, research and writing; proven knowledge of the jurisprudence of the Tribunal. Previous work experience with an international tribunal is highly desirable.

Languages
English and French are the working Languages of the ICTR. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required; a good working knowledge of French is desirable.

Assessment Method
The candidates will be assessed though a competency-based interview; a written test may be required.

Special Notice
The appointment is limited to the ICTR. Extension of the appointment is subject to extension of the Mandate and/or the availability of the funds. As the International Tribunals are not integrated in the Secretariat, UN Staff Members serve on assignment or secondment from their parent department/office, if selected.
